The winners of our Manhattan Bride honeymoon contest to Grand Bahama Island, Anna & Jason Kubicki, returned from Our Lucaya Resort with fabulous honeymoon memories.
Anna and Jason were given an ocean-view room in The Lighthouse Pointe complex, situated at the far end of the resort. "It was the perfect honeymoon setting," she says of the very private resort. Stretching over 370 acres of the island and featuring white sand beaches, two golf courses, a relaxing spa, and 14 cuisine collections, Our Lucaya is the largest resort on Grand Bahama Island. It also has a tennis center and provides countless activities, including a dolphin "close encounter" and snorkeling trips to Rainbow Reef. From their balcony Anna and Jason had a view of the ocean and the private garden. "When we got there we were exhausted," Anna says. "It would have been so easy to flop into one of the Bahamian-style chairs, but we could not wait to explore.
"On the first night we ate at Portobello’s, a delightful Italian restaurant, and although there was no conch on the menu, we found an array of other mouth-watering options. You haven’t tasted seafood until you’ve eaten on the Bahamian Islands." If you are in the mood to sit down to an elegant meal or if you just want to grab a quick bite to eat, there are plenty of places at the resort. Churchills Chop House serves great steaks and local seafood while China Beach has Pacific Rim cuisine with a distinctly Asian flair. "After splurging in the restaurants, the endless array of activities helped us bounce back into shape," says Anna, who enjoyed an adventurous day of parasailing with her husband. Our Lucaya also offers a couples’ massage at the Senses spa and a romantic horseback ride through hidden trails and along beautiful beaches.
"We spent the following days making really tough decisions. Should we lie on the beach, or by the pool? Should we swim in the ocean, or in one of the negative edge pools? Read books or row boats? There were so many choices." His family was thrilled by the engagement, and although it was a more chaotic proposal than Anna had pictured, she knew she was saying yes for the right reasons. Besides, the moment was unforgettable. A freelance publicist and writer, Anna was born in Krakow, Poland. Jason grew up in Napa Valley and is an engineer. For their wedding, Annas childhood priest flew in from Poland to marry the couple. "Our Lucaya is by no means a standard hotel," Anna continues. "It’s practically its own little village with three main sections, each featuring separate accommodations, restaurants, shops, swimming pools, and of course long stretches of pristine beaches. "As the sun set, we walked to the historic Port Lucaya, filled with souvenir shops, restaurants, and bars. It was a great place for people-watching and meeting ‘island-hoppers’ from all over the world." Although Anna and Jason hoped their honeymoon would last forever, they found themselves celebrating their last night on Grand Bahama with a ‘sunset cruise.’ "The sun made a magnificent display of colors as it set against the ocean," Anna says. "It was sad to pack our bags and take one last walk around the beautiful grounds of Our Lucaya," Anna recalls, "but in addition to a few souvenirs, we brought back fantastic memories that will last us a lifetime."
