Steve was in his first year of teaching at Riley Elementary School in South Plainfield, NJ. I was a senior at Rutgers and frequently subbed at South Plainfield schools. One day, I got called to sub at Riley. Steve and I saw each other in one of the classrooms, introduced ourselves, and spoke several times throughout the day. It was not long after that day that we went on our first date to see a movie. It felt as if we had known each other for years!
On Memorial Day weekend, three years later, Steve and I were at his parents’ house in Bayville, NJ. When we walked into the house, Steve suggested we put our bags upstairs immediately. I opened the door to his upstairs bedroom and saw a room filled with candles, rose petals, and flowers. By the time I turned around, Steve was down on one knee in the doorway.
As teachers, we wanted a wedding the following summer when we would both be off work. We had our heart set on a ceremony at St. Anthony’s in Belleville, NJ, so our search for a venue began in that area. Our first stop was Nanina’s in the Park. No other venue compared to the elegant atmosphere, the gorgeous gardens, or the wonderful staff at Nanina’s! Working with them was a wonderful experience. So many people find wedding planning stressful, but when you are working with the right people, it can be flawless! Tom Casella, the general manager, and the entire staff did everything they could to make our wedding day special. Every request we made was met and they truly went above and beyond for us.
We were married at the same church that Steve’s grandparents, parents, and many other family members had been married. From the church’s exquisite interior to the sentiment of being married in a church filled with so many family memories, it was the perfect ceremony.
Just a five minute ride down the road, we arrived at Nanina’s in our limo. Our cocktail hour was amazing; we are still hearing about it from our guests. We had passed hors d’oeuvres such as filet mignon baguettes, homemade calzones, maple-glazed scallops wrapped in bacon, assorted sushi, and more. We had every food station you could imagine including chilled, hot, and sautéed seafood bars; an Oriental station, a pasta station, and more. Our favorite station was the mac and cheese bar, which served mac and cheese in martini glasses!
The ballroom was breathtaking. Nanina’s truly does not need anything added to it. The lights, chandeliers, and skylight are not only amazing in person, but come out beautifully in pictures. Floating candles and rose petals on our tables added to the elegant look.
Guests then enjoyed a delicious dinner. Our signature dish was a duet of chateaubriand and shrimp Nanina’s, and we also offered chicken breast and vegetarian entrées. After dinner, the party really began and we danced the night away. Our DJ did a phenomenal job and kept the crowd happy all night!
Thank you to all our friends and family for being a part of the special day, especially to our wonderful bridal party for all of their support. A special thank you to our parents. Without them, this day would not have been possible. And thank you to Tom and the staff at Nanina’s for treating us like a king and queen.
