Matt and I both grew up in Brooklyn. I went to college with some of Matt’s neighborhood friends and the summer after my freshman year, they introduced us. We really hit it off and Matt asked me to be his girlfriend shortly after.
After six years of dating, Matt took me to visit the High Line. Walking from the north end toward the south end, Matt was secretly scouting out the perfect spot to propose. He asked if we should stop and take a picture, and before he gave his phone to a friendly stranger, he put it on video. We now have our magical moment on video to cherish forever!
We wanted a venue that was homey yet elegant. Grand Oaks Country Club was welcoming and felt like the grand home of a family member. Working with Margaret Addivinola, the director of catering, was great. She helped us pick the perfect package that included exactly what we wanted and fit our budget. Her organizational skills and attention to detail were very calming any time we felt overwhelmed with planning.
My family has been part of our parish for over 50 years and it is a stunning church for a wedding. My four sisters and I have a special wedding tradition where we sing “Lady of Knock,” a traditional Irish song, to honor our grandmothers. It helped us feel like all our loved ones were with us for the special day.
At cocktail hour, we had many passed appetizers and a Mediterranean table with an array of flat breads with hummus, marinated artichokes, roasted peppers, and olives. Some of the favorite hors d’oeuvres were grilled turkey sliders with avocado aioli, gorgonzola stuffed mushroom, and whipped goat cheese and prosciutto on crostini. Our guests loved our signature drink, apple cider margaritas!
Our ballroom décor had an understated elegance with a red and white color scheme. We had white and red flowers on all the tables, white table cloths, and red napkins. Soft white uplighting also gave a romantic ambiance to the room. I am a big fan of 90’s pop music, so we brought some N’Sync and Backstreet Boys songs for the party! We had a good mix of music with rock songs for Matt and some classic 60’s and 70’s wedding songs too.
Dinner started with a spinach and bacon salad with blackberry vinaigrette and a small plate of tortellini Alfredo. For the main course, guests could choose between grilled salmon with a tomato caper relish, chicken in crispy phyllo with a Madiera wine sauce, or grilled hanger steak in a red wine demi-glace. We loved all the food!
Designing our cake with Grand Oaks was so much fun and they perfected it. We just told them a number of flavors we like and they put together a delicious chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream and cannoli cream inside. Busy talking with all our guests, we did not even get a chance to eat our cake during the wedding. The Grand Oaks staff was nice enough to leave our sweetheart table, still set up with the cake plates, so even when everything was put away, we could have an intimate moment by ourselves in the ballroom to enjoy our wedding cake.
Thank you to Margaret and the Grand Oaks staff for helping us organize our perfect wedding day. And thank you to our friends and family for celebrating our love!
