A Grand Temple
Brent and I have been best friends since elementary school. We went to different colleges, but eventually moved back to our hometowns and began spending more time together. Eventually, we went on a date to a restaurant in NYC called Alta. Then we both got jobs in sales at tech companies and moved into the city together.
One day five years later, I had just gotten back from a business trip to San Francisco and Brent suggested taking our dog for a walk in Central Park. He led us down a less populated path, got down on one knee, and proposed! That afternoon, he surprised me again with a couples massage at a spa in Tribeca. We went to dinner later at Alta and ended the night by meeting up with our friends to celebrate.
We wanted a traditional Jewish ceremony. When we saw the grand temple at Temple Emanu-El, it blew us way. The temple and the reception room at Northern Valley have a romantic and elegant ambiance. Once we did a food tasting there, we knew this was our place. Working with Les Friedman, the owner, and Marty Maged, the general manager, was wonderful. They saw our vision from the beginning and made everything exactly how we wanted it.
We highlighted the natural beauty of the temple with very little décor. Candles lined our aisle for a simple but romantic feeling. Our chuppah, covered in white fabric, had a backlight behind it to make it stand out. We played a different meaningful song for each portion of the ceremony, from the guest seating, to Brent’s entrance, to my parents walking me down the aisle.
There was an insane amount of food at our cocktail hour! Everyone raved about all the dishes and hors d’oeuvres. Some of our favorites were the seared tuna, sushi, and baby lamb chops. Food stations and high and low tables for our guests were placed inside in the cocktail hour room and outside on the courtyard.
Our band understood the vibe we wanted for our party and no one left the dance floor until the night was over. I surprised Brent and sang “River Deep Mountain High” by Tina Turner with the band. To keep the party going rather than sitting back down for dessert, we had desserts like mini milkshakes, cookies, and cafe patrón passed on the dance floor.
For dinner, guests had a choice of prime rib of beef, salmon in a sweet Asian glaze, chicken roulade stuffed with both risotto and spinach, or a grilled eggplant rollatini. Everything was delicious!
Thank you Les and Marty for dealing with me! You go above and beyond in everything they do. Thank you to all our vendors, and a special shout out to our band for rocking the house all night! Thank you to all our friends and family for celebrating with us. And most importantly, thank you to our parents. None of this would be possible without you.
