A Whimsical Garden Ceremony

Jason works for the Staten Island Rapid Transit of Authority and I am the director of sales for Kleinfeld Bridal. To say I’ve been thinking of my wedding my whole life is an understatement. My husband and I met through our two best friends who were dating at the time and invited us along with them on a double date; little did we know we’d end up falling in love.

He proposed in our apartment one evening after I got home from a long day of work. He lit an entire room with candles, put rose petals on the floor, and had Frank Sinatra playing. When I found him, he was on one knee with our dog on his lap waiting for me to come through the door. After I said yes, we went to meet with our family and friends to celebrate our new engagement.

Working in Staten Island, my husband used to pass Above every day on the highway, so when it came time to look for a venue we knew we had to check it out. The second we walked in, we knew this was it. We didn’t look anywhere else! We loved how modern the ballroom was and that it was local, perfect for our huge Italian-Jewish family. We loved the feel of Manhattan in Staten Island. We worked with Jennifer Finch, event planner, who was amazing and made every change we wanted while taking care of all of our needs.

Our ceremony was in the garden gazebo at the Hilton Garden Inn, connected to Above. We wanted a whimsical feel, so we thought it was very romantic to have the outdoor garden for our ceremony. We had special fans made up for our guests with our program on it. Coincidentally, there were butterflies floating around us in the gardens that day and it was truly beautiful to have that special surprise.

For the evening, we had a black-tie affair that started with our cocktail hour. Some of our favorite specialties that were served were the baby lamb chops with a pomegranate pinot noir glaze, as well as the fried chicken and waffle hors d’oeuvres. Each bite of food was out of this world!

After cocktail hour all our guests moved into the ballroom which was absolutely breathtaking. The crystals on the ceiling looked like a summer sky. Outside the sun was just about to set, and our guests could watch it through the floor-to-ceiling windows. We had gorgeous crystal chandelier centerpieces that stood high on the table with a ball of flowers made of pink peonies, white hydrangea, and pink roses.

For dinner, we started with a grilled peach and arugula salad with aged balsamic and a goat cheese souffle. It was a perfect first course for a summer wedding in July. For the entrée, our guests had a choice of pan-seared beef filet with a zinfandel glaze, grilled semi-boneless hen with Sicilian rice stuffing, or seared sea bass with roasted lobster tails in a corn and saffron beurre blanc. The main attraction for dessert was our wedding cake but we also chose to do passed dessert bites, including chocolate milk shake shots, cherry cheesecake lollipops, and cinnamon beignets.

All our guests were dancing like crazy all night thanks to the help of our amazing band. We did the tarantella which we carried into the hora, to mix together the customs from our Italian-Jewish family.

Jason and I are so grateful to all our family and friends who were able to share in our special day. Our wedding day would not have been possible without their love and support. We would like to thank all our vendors who worked so hard to give us the wedding of our dreams. A very special thank you to Jennifer Finch, the staff at Above, and our wedding planner, Louis Avanti, for going above and beyond to make our dreams come true! Our wedding truly exceeded our expectations!
