An Antique Sanctuary
Jason and I, who are both attorneys, met at a Shabbat dinner for young professionals at a local temple on the Upper West Side. After the dinner, I accidentally knocked over the bin of empty plates, and Jason rushed over to help me. A month later, Jason and I met again through a mutual friend at a Hanukkah party at the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan.
New Year’s Day, we went on our first date right outside Central Park at Kashkaval in midtown. Ten months later, after having lunch at the same restaurant, Jason proposed during sunset on Pier 51, overlooking the Hudson River.
Jason surprised me with a trip to see Temple Emanu-El the next day. As soon as we pulled into the parking lot, I fell in love! The synagogue is absolutely beautiful with a gorgeous antique stained glass dome in the sanctuary. When we opened the doors of the synagogue, we were greeted and welcomed like family by Les Friedman, the owner of Northern Valley Affairs, the in-house caterer at Temple Emanu-El, and Marty Maged, the general manager. When our parents saw the synagogue and sampled the food, we knew we found our perfect wedding venue.
As we planned our wedding, Les and Marty were wonderful resources. They made very helpful recommendations as we selected our vendors and created an incredible menu for our wedding guests. Angela, my bridal attendant, was by my side every step of the way on my wedding day.
Guests were invited into the exquisite sanctuary with the sounds of a beautiful string trio for our ceremony. My bouquet resembled our elegant chuppah with soft, sheer fabric and a crown of cascading hibiscus and orchids. Our cocktail hour took place both indoors and outdoors in the large courtyard. Our friends and family are still talking about the incredible selection of foods. We had a Romanian barbecue, a slider bar with an assortment of toppings and sauces, fresh sushi and sashimi, creative signature martinis, and more.
Inside the ballroom, our florist created a romantic and elegant atmosphere with beautiful centerpieces of graduated heights featuring white roses, hydrangea, lisianthus, matthiola and baby orchids, accompanied by tabletop candles. It was magical! From the first song to the last, our band did not miss a beat. Our friends and family were on their feet dancing all night. The band was recommended by a friend and exceeded every expectation.
Dinner began with a grilled portobello mushroom and spinach salad. The entrée was a choice of prime rib of beef with au-jus sauce, chicken roulade with mushroom risotto, ponzu sea bass with a sweet Asian glaze, or grilled vegetable napoleon with portobello ravioli. For dessert, our guests enjoyed a chocolate molten lava cake with a raspberry sorbet, chocolate-covered strawberries, various passed treats, and finally, our four-tier wedding cake created and designed by Northern Valley Affairs.
Thank you so much to Les and Marty, who thought of everything to create a unique and surreal experience for our guests, which they still reminisce about today! We are also grateful to all our friends and family who shared this special day with us. Above all, we are extremely thankful to our generous and loving parents who made our incredible wedding day possible.
