A Special Signature Drink
I’m a wedding album designer and John is a special education math teacher. Prior to teaching, John worked with my cousin who set us up. We started talking and after about a week we decided to go on our first date.
John always said he wanted to propose at a time that I would least expect it. One day he invited me over to his house to look at his new quad, and even though I wasn’t that interested I appeased him by sitting on the quad and checking it out like I knew what I was looking at. Next thing I know he is on one knee with a ring box in his hand. I definitely didn’t see it coming while sitting on a quad that he would ask me to marry him!
Working for Milton Gil Photographers as a wedding album designer for years before getting engaged, I had a front row seat to hundreds of weddings each year. The photos were always amazing at each venue but Nanina’s in the Park always caught my eye. My husband’s entire family also grew up in Newark and he is from Belleville so he appreciated Nanina’s being in his backyard. Walking into Nanina’s for our first meeting felt like walking into someone’s Italian home, not a wedding venue. It was the first and last venue that we went to see after getting engaged. Tom Casella, the general manager, was always a pleasure to talk to and answered any questions I had.
Our ceremony took place right before our cocktail hour. We decided to take photos before our ceremony so we could enjoy the rest of the day with our guests. Lou and Nelson from Milton Gil captured wonderful first look photos which are my favorite from the day.
Milton Gil Photographers are complete professionals, giving such wonderful direction to capture those timeless moments of our wedding day without the photos looking posed.
Our guests were greeted at the cocktail hour with champagne and an old fashioned glass bottle of Coca-Cola. John’s favorite drink is Coca-Cola, so we decided to make that our signature drink, complete with red and white striped straws. It was a huge hit! We had a grill going outside with kebabs, a Chinese food station, and a seafood station with more shrimp than you can imagine. And of course, since both sides of our family are Italian, we had so many wonderful meats and cheeses.
For our reception we had decided on tall centerpieces that matched my bouquet with roses, hydrangeas, and calla lilies. The inside of the vase had raspberry colored orchids floating in water and the tables had lit candles and gemstones around each centerpieces. We had uplighting for a little splash of color throughout the room.
We decided on having a Romeo and Juliet dinner with both chateaubriand and chicken Sorrentino for our guests. No one had to choose! Dessert hour was by far my favorite part of our reception. We had chocolate cake with Oreo filling for John and red velvet for me. We also had a zeppole station, a waffle station, crème brulee, bananas Foster, and all different cakes and pastries.
Thanks so much to Lou and Nelson, my coworkers and photographers from Milton Gil. It was a pleasure to experience all that you do each wedding as a bride and groom. To everyone at Nanina’s, I cannot thank you enough for everything from our wedding day. My only complaint from our wedding day is that you all did such a good job that we want to do it all over again!
