A Flawless First Dance

Looking to release some wedding planning tension? Though it’s an old European cultural tradition, ballroom dancing may be your new stress therapy.

"Dancing has an energizing and focusing effect similar to yoga, tai chi, and meditation," says dance instructor Karen McDonald. "It also facilitates the partnering aspect of a relationship. The nuances of partner dancing resonate with the subtle communication necessary for a harmonious marriage."

While dance lessons are a wonderful way to spend time with your husband-to-be, you'll also learn the skills you'll need for a flawless first dance. "You'll become more aware of your posture," says Karen, "which will help you look poised and confident, and feel comfortable in the partnership of your dance."

If the thought of dancing in public makes you cringe, you might want to consider taking lessons from a professional who can help you with choreography and music selection.

"The average couple should begin lessons three to four months prior to their wedding," says Karen, "but some couples contact me 12 months ahead of time, especially when they want the entire bridal party to engage in lessons with them."

Recently, for a particular ‘Alice In Wonderland’ theme wedding, Karen helped the bride, the groom, and the bride’s father with lessons. To surprise his bride, the groom topped off the frivolity by arranging lessons for the entire bridal party so they could share in the evening of elaborate choreography.

For the comfort and convenience of clients, Karen can instruct couples or groups on location. "I go to rehearsal dinners, bridal showers, and bachelor and bachelorette parties in order to teach brides and grooms, and their friends and families. It brings cohesion to the group and it’s a fun activity to share together."

Born in England, Karen began dancing competitively at age 10, and later became the Australian National Champion, garnering 300 titles worldwide. Several years ago she retired from competitive dancing as the undefeated American Style National Champion. With 30 years experience in the field, she now finds enjoyment teaching experienced and novice dancers alike. "The most exciting part about working with couples," says Karen, "is witnessing the progression from an awkward beginning to a playful, happy ending."
