Real Wedding: Pelham/Split Rock Golf Club

"Jerome and I met in the summer several years ago, when I was bartending in Washington, D.C. It was relatively early in the evening and I was standing outside encouraging those passing by to stop in for a drink. Jerome, a new D.C. resident, was with his cousin and we began talking. He has a great sense of humor and I enjoyed the laughs we shared that evening, but the sparks had yet to fly.

"Jerome stopped by to see me several times over the following weeks. Something about him intrigued me, and he constantly kept a smile on my face. In mid-August he asked me out to a movie. As the lights dimmed in the theatre, Jerome held my hand and didn’t let go until the end of the film. It was wonderful, and we began our incredible journey.

"About one month before he proposed we began looking at rings. I don’t like surprises and told him I would rather know if he was going to propose. He threw me off with several reasons why it wasn’t the right time to get engaged.

"The day before Easter, while we were on our way to have dinner with my family, Jerome told me how he would “hypothetically” propose. He said he never thought he’d find someone who would make him so happy, and then he pulled my ring out of his pocket! I was shocked.

"We found Pelham/Split Rock Golf Course while searching on the Internet. The venue had been recently renovated and had the most magnificent décor and ballroom, and tons of personality.

"Although it was still in its initial stages of construction when we visited the site, it had the architectural ambiance we wanted, and they guaranteed it would be completed well before our wedding day.

"On the day of our wedding, the venue looked beautiful. The cocktail reception was held in a space with a bold art deco décor, comfortable chairs, large paintings, and a fireplace. During cocktail hour we had coconut shrimp cocktail served in pineapple halves with mango chutney, crab cakes, spring rolls, and spicy tuna in a cone with wasabi créme fraiche. We also served our signature drinks, blue Hawaiians and Mai Tai’s.

"Our reception took place in the on-premise tent, with glass walls and large hanging chandeliers. Our wedding colors were burnt orange, copper, and gold. As centerpieces, we had a mixture of branches and curly willows, with candles and crystals hanging from the branches and votives surrounding the base of the table. The food at Pelham/Split Rock Golf Course was the best I have ever eaten. For dinner our guests had a choice of marinated strip steak, Caribbean jerk chicken, and filet of sole.

"Our cake was a four-tiered red velvet cake with cream cheese icing and was adorned with fresh hydrangea flowers. At the end of the evening, each guest took home a clear box with two gourmet pyramid teas, two honey sticks, and homemade cookies.

"Our reception was included slow jazz music and heartfelt toasts. Our guests filled the dance floor the entire evening, dancing to Jamaican and Haitian music. We couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful wedding day!"
