"Years passed and our paths occasionally crossed. One evening however, things were different. I noticed he had become a tall, handsome man, and was no longer the brash boy I had met years ago in Europe. We exchanged pleasantries and began dating. After a year, things began to get serious between us. Tommy is a project manager in the construction industry and I own a boutique called Candy Plum in Astoria.

"In December of 2006, Tommy took me to dinner. On the way to the restaurant he made a detour to see the views of the Manhattan skyline and East River. He asked me to go with him to the edge of the pier to take some photos. But I noticed he didn’t have a camera. He began to feel around in his pockets, took out a box, and asked me to marry him. I was completely overjoyed.

"The location was the most important things for us. We wanted our wedding to reflect the magnificence of the city. We decided our venue needed unbridled size and energy while at the same time maintaining an intimate personality of its own. After scouting a number of locations within the city we found that, although beautiful in their own right, none of them offered us the powerful and inspired feeling of the Manhattan we knew and loved.

"We decided to look just outside the city and discovered Water’s Edge. From the moment we entered the venue we fell in love with it. Water’s Edge has the most spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline anywhere on the East River. The private dining rooms are enclosed by a complete wall of glass, which makes for awe-inspiring views.

"The owners, Marika and Stuart Somerstein, were completely warm and inviting. We were able to eat at the Water’s Edge restaurant a few times. Every dish we had was delicious. They have a critically acclaimed chef who was more than willing to make subtle changes and additions to our cocktail hour and reception. After meeting with their chef, wine specialist, and maître d, we were able to relax knowing that we were in good hands.

"On our wedding day, immediately following the ceremony, we had a pre-cocktail hour at our church ballroom. Our guests enjoyed Croatian delicacies and wines. At the Water’s Edge we held our second cocktail hour, which included seafood, pastas, roasted lamb and pig, and sushi.

"We couldn’t wait to celebrate. Water’s Edge ballroom was decorated with jewel-toned flowers in large candelabra vases. Pink up-lighting around the space also gave the room a romantic mood. The music, food, and atmosphere all came together that evening.

"Dinner was fantastic. The meal began with crab cakes and cheese tortellini with a wild mushroom sauce. Guests loved the tender filet mignon, roasted duck, and Chilean sea bass. We also had a Venetian hour with crepe’s, a wide assortment of desserts, and mixed fruits. After the reception, we rented The Marika, a private yacht which the Water’s Edge offers. The yacht took 150 of our wedding guests on a two-hour tour of the city. Aboard the yacht, we had a DJ, four drink stations, and more food. The staff at Water’s Edge made our wedding unforgettable. We had the time of our lives."
