A champagne picture! ‘Photograph us toasting,’ the bride and groom requested. I did, of course, but this is the next picture, a second later. More champagne-like, if you ask me, more robust, less contrived, more like they were. A toasting picture? Sure, the Statue of Liberty is toasting them!

Good wedding photography represents both events and emotional life. This picture is not a snapshot. It has artistic values: natural tones, original gesture, pretty color, and light.
This is an extemporaneous kind of photography that manages to be both genuinely romantic and emblematic of the cake-cutting event.

Sometimes not seeing a person’s face evokes more than seeing it, as it does here when we sense the flower girl’s nature, her girlness, her wonderment, even her poise.
This is my daughter years ago. I’ve always loved watching (and photographing) her as she herself observes the world.

My own wedding, and more of what I like. This graceful portrait (by Laurel Gerges) has a soft color palette and portrays an easygoing warmth between my wife and I.

There was a feeling of quiet in the room. The bridesmaids were easy-going and warm with each other. I made a special effort to take the shot quickly, and never disturbed them.

This picture is at the heart of what I try to do. Shots like this one are as profound as any posed portrait. One can sense the father of the bride’s love for his daughter and his reflectiveness on the day and their changing lives. As a portrait, it is formal, yet characteristically true and full of feeling. A photograph like this is my best gift to the bride.

This bride was joyous. Good nature and cheer were hallmarks of her personality, but highlighted here by the joys of the day. As a wedding photographer, I aspire to always portray real people and real sentiments in artful ways. Even light-hearted pictures can be transcendent. Photographs create memories. A photographer must be deeply attuned to the people and the event. I consider it my responsibility—and also my opportunity!
