Joe and I met during college at Loyola University. We were friends for two years before we started dating. As our first real date, we went to dinner for Joe’s birthday. Seven years later, I am now a veterinarian and Joe works in real estate development. I had been wanting to go to the New York Botanical Garden for a while, so one day Joe planned a day for us there, including a surprise proposal! After calling our families, we celebrated just the two of us with a wine tasting in the gardens and a special dinner.
A family friend attended a wedding at Brooklyn Botanic Garden and suggested we take a look at it. After seeing the venue, it was an easy decision. The Palm House, one of the event spaces they offer at the garden, and the entire venue, are so beautiful. Victoria Laughton, catering sales manager, was so helpful and knowledgeable in planning our wedding. When she took us on a tour of the venue, she gave us the pros and cons of each ceremony site. We actually ended up picking a different location than we thought due to her helpful insights! Knowing exactly what we wanted, she measured the venue spaces for our décor and ordered special tables for us. My wedding planner worked so well with Victoria and they both made everything as easy as possible for us.
We were married outside in the gardens under a beautiful arch decorated with natural greenery and blush flower accents. Joe’s best friend, Michael Corrado, did an incredible job as our officiant. My childhood friend’s dad played acoustic guitar for our ceremony music. Growing up, we used to always watch him play and it was wonderful to have him be part of our ceremony.
The cocktail hour set up at The Palm House, with the Lily Pool Terrace out front, was stunning. Butlers passed hors d’oeuvres and our signature cocktail, which was a take on a spicy margarita called “La Moretta.” Some of our favorite items were the sunchoke caviar, Long Island oysters, and crisp avocado fries. We also had two action food stations; one was an antipasto station with all kinds of meats, cheeses, and vegetables and the other was a Spanish Tapas table with classics like chicken empanadas and shrimp paella. We wanted the venue’s natural beauty to speak for itself, so we had simple décor in The Palm House. Our tables were decorated with alternating high and low centerpieces. The tall ones were gold metal frames filled with natural greenery and branches, which opened up so guests could still see people across from them. The low ones were gold bowls filled with sprigs of greenery and white and blush flowers, which matched my bouquet.
Dinner started with an appetizer of the “Little Gem Caesar” salad. For the main entrée, guests could choose from porcini-rubbed filet mignon in a red wine demi-glace, grilled Atlantic swordfish in a lime buerre blanc, or cauliflower steak. For the kids, we offered a fruit plate appetizer and chicken fingers for the main dish. Katie Backlund from Patina Events made our delicious brown sugar graham cake, topped with coffee mousse, for dessert!
Our DJ did a great job of playing a range of music throughout the night. He played acoustic covers of classic songs during dinner and modern top 50s songs as the party went on. He made sure to also include any songs our parents requested; Joe’s parents love to dance The Lindy Hop!
Thank you to our friends and family for making our wedding day so special. Thank you to all our vendors, with special thanks to our photographer and our wedding planner. Thanks to Victoria, Katie, and the Patina Events staff at Brooklyn Botanic Garden for making our night everything we wanted it to be.
