Our freshman year of college, Andrew and I were in the same dorm and on the same floor. We were friends at first and did not start dating until our junior year, when we were both studying abroad in different countries; I was in Italy and he was in Israel. He came to visit me in Italy and at the end of our semester abroad, we officially began dating. Six years later, Andrew surprised me with a picnic dinner in Central Park. We shared a blanket on The Great Lawn, overlooking the sunset, and Andrew asked me to marry him.
We fell in love with Temple Emanu-El when we pulled up its picturesque driveway. Andrew, my parents, and I arranged a meeting with Les Friedman, the owner, and also with Marty Maged, the general manager. They were both so warm and treated us like family the minute we arrived. When we entered the sanctuary, the sun shining through the antique stained glass dome created dazzling lights of gold and red. At that moment, we knew this would be our venue. We stayed for a tasting and the food was so delicious we never wanted to leave! Wedding planning was fun and easy and Les and Marty were great resources. They gave recommendations for our menu and décor. Angela Alburtus, my bridal attendant, waited on me hand and foot all day. I don’t know how I would have gotten through it all without her!
Before guests took their seats at the ceremony, they were greeted with an assortment of drinks in fun martini glasses. We were married in the sanctuary under a magnificent chuppah of white birch wrapped with greenery, white roses, hydrangeas, and baby orchids. Our friends and family are still talking about how much they enjoyed cocktail hour. It was held both indoors and outdoors, which gave it a great mix. We had passed hors d’oeuvres such as lamb chops and salmon pizza bites. Our favorite food stations were the Romanian barbeque and the sushi display.
Our florist helped us create the perfect vintage wonderland I wanted. Our tables were decorated with high flower centerpieces of white roses, hydrangeas, and greenery with high candelabras draped in strands of pearls. We had touches of candlelight to add a romantic aura to the room. Our band was fantastic and drew all our friends and family to the dance floor.
Dinner started with a mouthwatering sampler plate of grilled vegetable Napoleon, mushroom duxelle purse, and a field green salad. The entrée options were chateaubriand with a demi-glace, pistachio salmon with panko crust, chicken roulade with sautéed spinach and risotto, and eggplant rollatini with Portobello ravioli. For dessert, our guests enjoyed passed desserts such as blueberry pie, chocolate-dipped strawberries, and our wedding cake.
Thank you to our generous and loving parents who made our wedding day possible and to our friends and family for helping us celebrate our very special day. A special shout out to my mom for being my party planner! Thank you to our amazing vendors and to Les, Marty, Anglea, and Northern Valley for bringing every last detail to life and making sure everything ran smoothly.
