A Cocktail Hour With Live Jazz at Dyker Beach Golf Course
Anthony and I met through a mutual friend, and with a shared love of food, music, travel, and animals, we realized we were compatible in so many ways. I’m a director for the NYC Parks Department and Anthony is an NYC sanitation worker.
Anthony's proposal was surreal. I am an aspiring musician who sometimes plays at venues in New York City. That summer, I was playing every few weeks at Bungalow Bar in Queens. Family and friends always came to see me play, but on the day Anthony proposed around 30 of them showed up! Anthony had requested I play “Let It Be Me” by Ray LaMontagne, a special song to us. I sang it during my second set and Anthony was standing on the opposite side of the room holding up a series of signs, ending in “Will you marry me?” He walked over and got down on one knee. After saying yes, we celebrated with all who were there.
Believe it or not, Anthony was the one who had the vision for our wedding, having worked in the industry for years as a DJ. Our venue, Dyker Beach Golf Course, is well-run and beautifully decorated. A European-style, brick-face building holds the Grand Ballroom while the outside gardens and flowered walkways complement the well-manicured golf course. It’s also only a few blocks from where we live. We worked with Vicky Kostopoulus, event planner, and Eman Amer, assistant sales associate. They were so receptive to our ideas and helpful in providing their own, and they were instrumental in achieving our vision.
After a solid year of planning, our big day arrived. The weather was absolutely perfect. Our ceremony was in front of a beautifully decorated gazebo. We exchanged our own vows and had a close friend sing “Forever” by Ben Harper. After being pronounced, we were showered with pink rose petals by our family and friends.
Our cocktail hour was held on an outdoor patio with wrought iron tables and grand views of the surrounding landscape of the golf course. A live jazz band serenaded our guests. There were different buffet style stations that provided an array of food, as well as butler passed hors d’oeuvres.
After the cocktail hour, our guests were escorted into the ballroom. It was like a fairytale. Each table had an eight-foot-tall centerpiece made up of long, flowing wooden branches with purple orchids and low-hanging votive candles, all held in giant glass vases. For dinner, our guests were served a tri-color salad with walnuts and goat cheese, jumbo cheese-stuffed tortellini, and a choice of filet mignon, chicken wrapped in prosciutto and mozzarella, or sea bass with wine and roasted tomatoes. For dessert, different tables of cakes, cookies, pastries, and fruit left our guests in awe. There was also a chocolate fountain and cheesecake lollipops. We danced the night away with our family and friends to many current and nostalgic favorites. We had two traditional Greek dances in which everyone lines up and dances in a big circle around the room.
It's hard to put into words the joy of our magical day. We were told by so many of our guests that it was the best wedding they had ever been to. We thank Vicky and Eman from Dyker Beach and of course all of our friends and family who were instrumental in making our special day a reality.
