Hudson Valley Views
Fitz and I met at a party when we were both attending Boston College. As college students, Fitz and I spent a summer interning in New York City and we regularly met for lunch at City Hall Park Fountain. We went to Brooklyn Law School together and now we are both attorneys. After six years of dating, Fitz brought me back to City Hall Park Fountain and proposed.
I grew up in Garrison and knew I wanted to get married in the Hudson Valley. Fitz and I were blown away when we visited The Garrison. We loved the incredible outdoor ceremony space that overlooks the Hudson River and the renovated interior with floor-to-ceiling windows. We loved working with their special events manager, who truly loves what he does and gave us 100 percent to make sure our wedding was flawless. Along with the staff, he was responsive, organized, and imaginative. On the night of our wedding, Donna Torre, our bridal attendant, was so attentive and made sure everything ran smoothly.
We were married under The Garrison’s gorgeous pergola, surrounded by our loved ones and beautiful flowers, overlooking the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River. We personalized our ceremony by having Fitz’s aunt and uncle, who are both pastors, marry us and by writing our own vows.
The signature drink at our cocktail hour was a tarragon gin lemonade that we called “Syd’s Gin Fitz.” We had several passed hors d’oeuvres including mini cheesesteaks, grilled flatbread, chilled shrimp cocktail, and more. Some of the favorite dishes were the herb and garlic meatballs from the Italian station and the Prince Edward Island mussels from the Mediterranean station.
The Garrison’s ballroom really speaks for itself, so we went with simple décor. Each table had a cluster of votive candles on it and a low arrangement of local and seasonal flowers designed in a white-washed wooden window box. Our table numbers were superimposed on sepia photographs of us and framed in a variety of vintage frames. I am an ice cream aficionado and Fitz is a whiskey aficionado, so we included an ice cream sandwich cart and a whiskey and cigar bar to have our personalities reflected in the reception.
Our 10-piece band was incredible. We had seen them perform at a friend’s wedding and were very impressed. Our guests were equally as impressed and one of our friends decided to book them for their wedding later this year!
We started dinner with a mozzarella and tomato salad. For the entrée, guests had a choice of seared striped bass with tarragon beurre blanc or short ribs of beef with red wine veal jus. I had the fish and Fitz had the short ribs; both were exceptional. In addition to our wedding cake, we also served a variety of cookie plates and chocolate-covered strawberries for dessert.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone at The Garrison for helping us to create the perfect wedding day. Thank you to our friends and family for making the day so special!
